Sony Music is reportedly ending its working relationship with producer Lukasz “Dr. Luke” Gottwald due to his ongoing legal battle with Kesha. The immediate move would terminate the label’s relationship with Dr. Luke one year before his contract expires.
According to TheWrap, details of how Sony would end its deal with Dr. Luke ahead of schedule are unknown, but that the label is committed to freeing itself from the public-relations headache it is now undergoing, caused by Kesha’s fans and supporters decrying Sony's support of her alleged abuser. Artists like Lady Gaga, Adele and Ariana Grande have spoken out in support of the “TiK ToK” singer, who has claimed that Dr. Luke physically, verbally and sexually abused her during her time on his Kemosabe Records imprint on Sony.
Last month, a judge denied Kesha an injunction that would have allowed her to record music outside of her existing record deal with Dr. Luke and Sony.
“There is no contest. Kesha has no case in regards to her contract but they can’t afford the Adeles of the world out in the streets calling the label unsupportive,” a source close to the situation tells TheWrap. “The fact that this hasn’t already been taken care of with Luke is confusing, especially for people in the building.”
Reps for Sony did not immediately respond to Fuse’s request for comment. Another protest outside of Sony’s New York offices was set to take place on Friday (Mar. 11), in support of Kesha’s musical freedom.
